Can an AI argue any side and still sound like science?

Give two chats opposite briefs on the same topic and both will hand you facts that feel serious. That is the feature, not a glitch.

Here is a clean test. Open two separate chats. Tell one to defend a position. Tell the other to attack it. Ask both for more than vibes. Ask for facts, mechanisms, studies, the kind of language that sounds like a briefing, not a rant. Watch what comes back. Both sides will sound informed. Both sides will sound careful. Both sides will sound like they did the reading.

The model does not wake up with a view. It has a frame you handed it, and then it fills that frame with the most plausible-sounding material it can assemble. Push it toward vaccines and you get a stack of reasons they work. Push it the other way and you get a stack of reasons for doubt. Same machine. Opposite conclusion. Scientific tone in both rooms.

A mirror, not a lamp

That is why the flashlight image works. If you only shine from one angle, the object looks settled. If you walk around it, the shadows move. The chat will happily walk with you. It will not, on its own, insist that you finish the lap.

The uncomfortable part is how good the material feels when it matches what you already wanted. A reply that confirms you does not announce itself as a confirmation. It announces itself as evidence. You can collect ten points for and ten points against and still overweight the ten that fit.

So is the model lying? Because two opposite briefings cannot both be the truth.

Usually it is not lying in the cartoon sense. It is doing something slippier. It selects, arranges, and stresses whatever belongs inside the brief you gave it. Facts really do sit on more than one side of a live debate. The model is good at fetching them and terrible at telling you which pile should win. That job stays with you, and most of us are bad at it the moment someone smart-sounding agrees with us.

Use it like a scientist would. Ask where the claim breaks. Ask what would change the conclusion. Ask for the strongest case you do not already like. If you only ever ask it to dress your current view in better clothes, it will. And it will do that in a voice that sounds like a paper, not a fan.
